Welcoming Lilian
Chris and I got the amazing opportunity to shoot the story of a sponsor child from Kenya, Lilian, coming off the plane and joining the family that will be her’s for the next four years. Let me unfold this story of second chances for you:
- We all waited in the airport for a couple hours for Lilian’s plane to land
- Watching as person after person got off the escalator, hoping each time that Lilian was one of them
- She finally arrived with Michelle — the amazing woman who started an organization in Kenya 7 years ago and has, with the help of donors, put 250 children through school (so far!)
- Lilian wore a beautiful skirt that she picked out just for her journey to America
- Although nervous and overwhelmed, her smile lit up every room we were in
- We left the airport to go pick out some school uniforms for her. On this day, she had her first car ride and her first plane ride
- The weather was perfect
- This is Mark — the man that worked for months to get Lilian able to come to America and stay with his family until she graduates from high school
- Going into the uniform store
- Everyone was excited and anxious to see Lilian in the new uniforms
- This is the first time she wore a skirt that didn’t come half-way down her calves. She was somewhat embarrassed, but always joyful and thankful
- Michelle was overwhelmed — this is what she’s been waiting to see for 7 years and has a dream of bringing more children to America for a better education
- Lilian tried on about 4 outfits for her new private school experience
- The Sleep Number next door heard her story and gave Lilian a free pillow as a Welcome to America gift
- Hugging Michelle
- Hugging her videographer, Chris
